Political Piety

I was too young to glean anything from it personally at the time but I've grown up with the image and words of JFK's speech so many years ago. I think it's sad that anyone running for office would be pressured (I do think he was) to give a speech qualifying and defending his faith.

It's just sad.

It happened.

Mitt Romney has been pressured for a long, long time to make a speech "explaining Mormonism" for whatever that means.

Romney is a skillful orator and portrayed himself as a strong, confident presence during delivery of his well-composed message. "I believe in my Mormon faith and I endeavor to live by it. My faith is the faith of my fathers – I will be true to them and to my beliefs."

Although I do not have Mormon ancestors it was especially sincere to me that Romney would publicly declare his faith to be of greater worth to him personally than even the highest office in the nation. He stood valiantly for his faith, his ancestors, and the teachings that have been such an integral part of his life and family.

On this day, Mitt Romney is my hero.
