There were two letters in the envelope. One was general conversation, talking about some genealogy research I was working on at the time. The other letter revealed more of day to day life, as it was then. As indicated by the date at top right of the page, this letter was written when Jacob was only two weeks old. It seems so odd to read where I'd identified him as "Jake" instead of Jacob. I don't recall ever using the shorter version as a matter of routine.
Needless to say, I was in full tear mode by the time I finished reading the letter. I am sappy like that. I called Zena and asked how she could have done that - not warned me about the (tear inducing) mail and learned, between tears, that she hadn't sent me the letters. Clyde had sent the letters after finding them recently. He has apparently been driving Zena batty too asking whether I'd gotten my mail yet. I am so grateful he did ... through the flood, it was still so very good to take that trip down memory lane. In the closing words of the second letter, I am reminded how very much it meant to me to talk to my mom.
"Well, Mother, my dear, I guess I should be bidding you adoo* for this writing. I will be calling you in a couple of days, looking forward to talking with you again. It sure does seem like forever between Saturdays lately!!! Love 'ya..."
(yes, that's how I spelled adieu :} at the time)
Love y'all!
